A Cat with her Kitten.

There is only one pet in RuneScape Classic, the kitten, which can grow into a cat. Players can earn the right to raise kittens after completing the quest Gertrude's Cat.

The RuneScape Classic game engine does not have support for non-player character followers. Pet cats exist only as an inventory item that can be fed fish, given milk, played with, used to kill rats, or sold for Death-Runes to the poor citizens of West Ardougne.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The idea of having collectible virtual pets was popular at the time RuneScape Classic was being developed, with contemporary examples such as Neopets, Tamogachi, and Pokémon.
  • The planned addition of Summoning spells may have necessitated the implementation of a follower system, like was done in RuneScape 2.
  • Camels were a planned follower in early 2001, but item banks were added instead.[1]
  • There are a few other creatures in RuneScape Classic that are alive and obtainable items that the player could pretend are a pet: The Swamp Toad, King worm, Seaslug, all the catchable fish (though their survival is dubious), Messenger pigeons, and Scorpions in a cage. In fact, there is nothing to stop the player from adopting a potato or any other item as their pet.
