2001 was the year in which RuneScape was released. The core of the game was established in this year, starting on 4 January 2001 with 6 quests and 19 listed skills (8 of which were either merged or were not implemented), and ending with 17 quests and 16 listed skills (of which only 2 were not implemented).
Key updates not present on release this year were:
- Banks
- The release of Asgarnia
- Magic and Prayer, coming from GoodMagic, EvilMagic, PrayGood, and PrayEvil.
- Fishing
- The release of the Wilderness and the removal of world-wide Player killing
- Dragon Slayer, along with Rune armour and weaponry
- The first Holiday drops
It was a critical year for Jagex, in which the company struggled to handle the massive success of RuneScape. Many of the initial Pay-to-play features were developed during the last few months of this year, though they wouldn't be released until 2002.
