The logo of RuneScape Classic utilized the font "Choc", which was designed in 1955 by Roger Excoffon, and converted for the computer as "Staccato 555" in the 1990s by Corel. Letters that were used in the logo are highlighted in yellow.

There are many Fonts used in RuneScape Classic. None of them were actually created by Jagex, but instead, existing freely available fonts were converted to JF (Jagex Font) format.

In-game main font

[edit | edit source]

The main font used to render all in-game text (other than in CAPTCHAs) is a bitmap variant of Arial without anti-aliasing. The game uses bold variants of font sizes 12, 13, 14, 16, and 24, as well as a regular variant for size 11.

For most of the game interface, size 12 bold Arial is used. However, for certain components that need to be small and unassuming, such as the chat tabs, size 11 regular Arial is used instead.

Examples

[edit | edit source]

An example of size 12 bold Arial is shown here: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghjklmnopqrstuvwxyz 01234567890!@#$%^&*(){}[];'\:"

CAPTCHA fonts

[edit | edit source]

After 2003, players were required to solve a CAPTCHA to reduce their Fatigue to 0%. Various off-the-shelf fonts were used for the CAPTCHA, primarily from two foundries, Typodermic and Pizzadude. Notably, the fonts by Pizzadude are "free for personal use", meaning they were possibly used in violation of their license. Since the majority of fonts are from Typodermic and public domain, it is possible that the Pizzadude fonts were included by mistake.

CAPTCHAs are streamed as pre-rendered run-length encoded image files from the server. The actual font files are stored only on the RuneScape Classic server, but most likely were converted to JF format (in a similar way to the in-game font Arial, i.e. bitmap without anti-aliasing) at size 30. It is most easy to tell that they are exactly size 30 by looking at where the horizontal lines are rendered in the font Abduction 2000.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Internally at Jagex, the main font used throughout the game is called Helvetica. Yet, the font used is Arial, which can clearly be identified by the appearance of the capital G letter. While bitmap versions of Helvetica can be distributed without paying licensing fees (unlike the scalable versions), potential advantage of using Arial over Helvetica is its inclusion in Microsoft Windows for free.
  • A size 12 regular Arial and a size 20 bold Arial font are created by the game client on load, but those fonts are never actually used.
  • Since a hidden update on 8 April 2004, the main font used throughout the game was no longer included in the game client. From then on, the client tried to find the Arial font on the player's computer. While this had no impact on players on Windows computers, which often contain an accurate version of Arial, this decision resulted in rendering issues for players on other systems, such as Unix, as another sans-serif font would be picked instead.
  • The font used in the logo of RuneScape Classic, Choc, has since become very popular in signage for Asian restaurants.[1]
