A comparison of standard and low detail mode.

F1 is a keyboard key that when pressed while logged in to RuneScape Classic results in the screen suddenly becoming barred and darkened.

The game engine uses scanline rendering to draw its graphics, and this mode halves the amount of scalines it draws. The game does not utilize a GPU to render polgyons (it uses software rendering), thus this mode would enable slower CPUs to render the game at a faster, playable framerate.

Trivia

• This feature was present in RuneScape on its release 4 January 2001. In fact, the option to press F1 to activate a lower-quality mode was a feature present in some of Andrew Gower's other games even before RuneScape was released.
