Upon release, smithing items required much higher levels, which meant that obtaining higher-tier Plate Mail Bodies or 2-handed Swords was virtually impossible. By April 2001, almost half of the tip.it-users, the biggest fan site at the time, thought that smithing was the non-combat skill that needed to be updated most urgently[1]. Eventually, new smithing tables were released on 8 May 2001. While smelting levels remained the same, items that required more bars could now be made at lower levels.

- The player S H A R K was the first player who was able to mine an adamantite ore, achieving level 70 Mining on or slightly before 23 March 2001. This allowed Bluerose13x to confirm the smithing requirement[1].
- The first player who was able to smith an iron platebody achieved level 64 Smithing on or slightly before 30 March 2001[1].
