Raise skeleton was an early concept for a Summoning spell which was never released in RuneScape Classic. It would have been available at level 51 Magic, and consumed 5 Earth-Runes, 5 Fire-Runes, 1 Life-Rune, and 5 bones when cast. Because bones are not stackable, this spell would have been difficult to cast repeatedly.
Existence in game files[edit | edit source]
Raise skeleton was never visible in the Spellbook, but was added to the game's internal cache files likely on 24 May 2001 (Update) when much of the modern Free-to-play spellbook was designed.[1]
The idea was abandoned in Classic with its removal from the game's internal cache files in late December 2001.[2] This was at the same time that much of the preparation for the upcoming release of Pay-to-play was also being done.
Implementation post-Classic[edit | edit source]
The concept of "Raise skeleton" would go on to be implemented in OldSchool RuneScape over 20 years later, with the release of Resurrection Spells on 16 June 2021 (Update). Implemented as a single Resurrect Skeleton spell during development, it was split into three tiers of Skeletons of different strengths for release. It bears a striking resemblance to the description of the "Raise skeleton" spell in Classic, as players are finally able to "Raise a skeleton warrior you control!". However, according to Mod Ash, it is "Unlikely"[3] that the skeleton resurrection spells in OldSchool RuneScape were directly inspired by this unreleased spell in Classic.
Life-Runes were not used for the resurrection spells in OldSchool RuneScape. Instead, it seems that giving Cosmic-Runes additional utility was considered a better design than introducing a new rune.
