# Forum:XP Formula

Forums: Index > Maple Grove > XP Formula

The formula for killing a NPC is as follows:

(Combat Level * 2) + 20

A Chicken is level 3, so the formula for a Chicken would be the following:

(3 * 2) + 20

You can see that it will end up to 26 pretty fast. 26 is the total experience for a Chicken. But that also includes Hits. So what you have to do, is the following:

Hits = 26 / 4, which is 6.5.

There are two options for the other skills (Attack, Defence and Strength), namely, the skill, or controlled...

Controlled mode: The experience = 26 / 4, which is 6.5.
The skill mode: The experience = (26 / 4) * 3, which is 19.5.

Could there be a way to automatically calculate this for NPC articles? -- 14:07, October 28, 2014 (UTC)

Don't you mean hitpoints instead of combat level? Joeytje50talk 15:41, April 23, 2012 (UTC)
Yes, thank you. --Stormykins 17:25, April 23, 2012 (UTC)
Are you sure this formula applies to higher levelled monsters too? For example, does it apply to guards? And if you got the skills to test it, black knights? It could be that the +20 is not always +20, but that that depends on the level. If you're sure this is the formula, I'll add it to the monster infobox.Joeytje50talk 10:18, April 24, 2012 (UTC)
This formula is correct, but it does actually use the combat level, not the hits level. And yes, it does apply to higher leveled monsters such as guards. I think it's quite important to get this into the monster infobox, because it's quite unclear exactly what should go in the experience field (hits, controlled, non-controlled? or just non-controlled? most pages seem to just have non-controlled). -- 13:00, October 28, 2014 (UTC)

## This has been implemented

Bad news: It breaks monsters which display the combat style as a comma-separated list (such as goblins). I'm not sure how to solve this since there isn't a statement which allows one to detect whether a template variable contains something (in this case, a comma). We could change the way we show NPCs with more than one combat level (more than one infobox is the easiest route, most likely)...

Good news: The XP display is much more concise, and lesser demon's XP isn't wrong any more.

It will probably take a while for the cache to update. For now, going to edit the article and then previewing it will show the new formulaic XP display.-- 14:07, October 28, 2014 (UTC)
