Forum:A few more words about Dialogue
Okay, so perhaps before we get too deep into this push for dialogue I think more explicit talk is in order.
Record things as they appear[edit source]
I would like to impress upon people the importance of restating what dialogue a player says after a dialogue option. This is important because there are times in which the player either A. Does not say what the options say verbatim or B. They might not even say anything at all.
Look at the dialogue I recorded here: Wydin/Dialogue. As you can see there are times in which the player does exactly what I mentioned. Sure most of the time the player will mime the chat option, however there are instances in which Jagex did not properly code the dialogue. If transcripts are to be truly verbatim I think it is critical that these mistakes be properly recorded.
Coding transcripts[edit source]
Speaking of mistakes, oh boy are they in most dialogues. If you run into a mistake while you are transcribing I would recommend you immediately note what it is, while you are doing your write up so you don't accidentally assume you did it and remove it when you are coding it up.
When you are coding it onto the wiki then use {{sic}} to show that it is not a transcription error on your part. Seriously the person who coded digsite quest... loves loves loves to do punctuation with a space for some odd reason and there is so much chat in that quest too lol.
- bla bla ![sic]...
Ultimately, certainly having transcripts at all is better than nothing. However, I think if we take the time to record things more exacting that the preservation will be more true.Shasta Sms (talk) 12:11, May 27, 2018 (UTC)
But wait player I have more to say!![edit source]
Also, please do not forget to talk to the NPC again immediately after initially talking to them. Often time additional dialogue will occur and in some cases bugs too... Digsite has a particularly broken NPC... Shasta Sms (talk) 12:26, May 27, 2018 (UTC)
Subcategories[edit source]
P.S. Can someone make a sub cats for the NPC Dialogue cat. I think having subs like incomplete dialogue, monster, and quest would be good ideas to implement.
