Prior to 3 July 2002[1], new players could choose a class when creating an account. Depending on the class chosen, players would start with a slightly higher level in the related skills, and given some bonus items to get started on that path. The class system was ultimately removed because the differences between the classes were too minor, and Andrew did not like that the game forced you to make a choice before you understood its consequence.[2]

About 3 months after the removal of the class system, on 24 September 2002, Tutorial Island was released. Between when the class system was removed and prior to Tutorial Island, all new players would start with a bronze Axe, one piece of cookedmeat, and a tinderbox, similar to Adventurers, but would only be given 2 attack, 2 strength, 2 defense, and 10 hits as initial starting levels.[3]

Available Classes[edit | edit source]

Note that the Necromancer class was removed after a major update to the magic skill which merged GoodMagic and EvilMagic. The Miner class was not available until a couple of months after the release of RuneScape.[2]
