As with all black equipment , this item can not be made by the player using the smithing skill. It may only be obtained by receiving it as a drop from killing Moss Giants.

- The Black Square Shield was released on 5 February 2001, which is 2 months before the Black Kite Shield, released 6 April 2001. Every other Square Shield and Kite Shield combination have been released on the same day.
